Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Return to Top-50 Highlight List

26 Violets Qualifying for NCAA Championships is #2

The New York University men's and women's swimming & diving teams found great success during their 2019-20 seasons as a total of 26 team members qualified to compete at the NCAA Division III National Championships. That feat ranks #2 on the NYU Top-50 Varsity Sports Highlight List of 2019-20.

All 26 were deemed All-Americans as the Championships were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Each team featured 13 qualifiers.

On the men's side, 11 swimmers and two divers were headed to the NCAA's. The Violets were led by University Athletic Association (UAA) Men's Co-Swimmer of the Year Giorgio DelGrosso (Keego Harbor, MI/Cranbrook Kingswood), who produced record-breaking, first-place performances in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events at the UAA Championships. Thomas Pritchard (Durham, NC /Northern Durham ) was also set to participate at the NCAA's after shattering the UAA record in the 1,650-yard freestyle by over nine seconds. The previous record-holder, fellow Violets' swimmer Graham Chatoor (Glencoe, Trinidad/International School of Port Spain), was also scheduled to compete.

"Giorgio's season was amazing. He kept getting better and better, and I have no doubt he would have walked away from nationals with NCAA titles," said Head Coach Trevor Miele. "I am really proud of him and I wish he had the opportunity to show the country how fast he is."

Cole Vertin (San Jose, CA/St. Francis) and Hunter Whitbeck (Acton, MA /Acton-Boxborough Regional ) were the men's divers who qualified after finishing within the top seven at the NCAA Northeast Regional Diving Championships.

For the women, 12 swimmers and one diver planned on competing at the NCAA's. Most notable was Honore Collins (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township), who was looking to defend her national titles in the 200-yard and 400-yard individual medley, as well as the 200-yard butterfly. She won five events at the UAA Championships, broke a pair of records, was named UAA Women's Swimmer of the Year, and NYU Senior Athlete of the Year.

"Honore pushed herself to another level this year, in and out of the pool," Miele explained. "The times she was posting in workouts were extraordinary, and I think she had at least two NCAA records in her this year. I have no doubt she would have repeated as NCAA Swimmer of the Year."

Newcomer Jessica Flynn (Charlotte, NC /Charlotte Latin School) had a standout season that resulted in her earning UAA Women's Co-Rookie of the Year honors and NYU Female Freshman Athlete of the Year.

"I am so proud of these teams," Miele added. "They were a special group, and I am grateful that I had the opportunity to coach them."
