NYU Highlight List Rolls On

Men's Fencing Team's Victory Over Top-Ranked Columbia is #9

The men's fencing team returns to the New York University Top-50 Varsity Sports Highlight List of 2019-20 at #9 with its victory over defending National Champion Columbia University at the George Kolombatovich Memorial Meet on February 12.

The Violets traveled uptown to Columbia's Morningside Heights campus that evening to face the host Lions, as well as squads from Vassar College and Sacred Heart University.

It turned out to be an evening full of highlights as NYU defeated Columbia (16-11), Vassar (18-9) and Sacred Heart (26-1).

The men were led in foil by Eric Zobel (Seattle, WA/Lakeside), who tallied seven wins and was perfect against Sacred Heart and Vassar. Grant Williams (Atlanta, GA/The Galloway School)Jamie Ren (Hong Kong, Hong Kong/The Lawrenceville School (Lawrenceville, NJ)) and Zachary Schindler (Cambridge, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) all had identical 5-1 sabre records, while Liam Carpenter (Bedford, MA/St. John's Prep) won six epee bouts.

"This was a fantastic evening," said Head Coach Steve Mormando. "The team had outstanding performances and was able to take down the number-one team in the country (Columbia). It was an honor to be their coach tonight."

The men's fencing team, which finished the season with a 20-8 record, debuted on the Top-50 List at #30 with its perfect 6-0 day at the Eric Sollee Invitational on February 1.
