Wrestling Returns to Top-50 Highlight List

UAA Championship Victory is #8

The wrestling team makes its third appearance on New York University's Top-50 Varsity Sports Highlight List of 2019-20 after earning its first University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship since 2017 (and its 11th overall) by defeating Case Western Reserve University and the University of Chicago on Saturday, February 15, at NYU's Brooklyn Athletic Facility.

The Violets, who were ranked #11 in the nation by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) at the time, overwhelmed Case 43-6 in its first match and then clinched the title with a 28-11 victory over Chicago.

NYU won eight of the 10 bouts vs. the Spartans, as Cole Karam (Bath, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) (165), Will Ortman (Hopewell Valley, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central) (285), Tyler Crew (St. Marys, GA/Camden County) (125), and Trent Furman (Washington Township, NJ/Westwood Regional)  (133) all produced falls. Both Sean Lyons (Sewell, NJ/St. Joseph's Prep) (157) and Miguel Ruiz (Madera, CA/Madera) (184) recorded technical falls.

Then in the Championship Match vs. the Maroons (who had earlier defeated Case 32-18), NYU won the first three bouts and were never seriously threatened. Jack La Corte (Monmouth Beach, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) (197) recorded a first-period fall, while Crew produced a technical fall and Lyons scored a major decision.

Lyons was named the UAA's Most Outstanding Wrestler, Head Coach Bruce Haberli and his assistants were named UAA Coaching Staff of the Year and six NYU wrestlers were selected All-UAA.

The wrestling team had previously appeared on the Top-50 List at #38 and #20 (see below).
