NYU Athletics offers a variety of safety training and certification courses for members and non-members. Classes are available based on scheduled availability and class(es) capacity throughout the calendar year.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
ADULT AND PEDIATRIC FIRST AID/CPR/AED
The 2021 Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED course equips students to recognize and care for a variety of first aid, breathing, and cardiac emergencies involving adults, children and infants. It is designed for students who need a certification that satisfies OSHA, workplace or other regulatory requirements. Upon successful completion, a valid 2 year digital certificate for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED is issued.This course is offered in a blended learning format with an online portion that takes approximately 2 hours followed by an in person training session that takes 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Online portion must be completed in its entirety prior to the in person class.
*This course does not cover CPR requirements for Lifeguards in New York State.
This course also has optional add-on skill boosts which include:
- Opioid Overdose and Naloxone Administration
- Asthma and Quick-Relief Medication
- Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine Auto-Injector Administration
- Head Neck Muscle Bone Joint Injuries and Splinting
- Life-Threatening Bleeding and Tourniquet Application
- Each skill boost adds about 20 minutes to the class length (no online portion needed)
BASIC LIFE SUPPORT
The American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) course is designed to train healthcare professionals including nurses, physicians, EMS professionals, and other healthcare and public safety personnel to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants. This certification is required in most healthcare facilities, and is strongly recommended for any students in the nursing, medicine, dental, or other healthcare related schools. This course is offered in a blended learning format with an online portion that takes approximately 2.5 hours followed by an in person training session that takes 2.5 hours.
Online portion must be completed in its entirety prior to the in person class.
*This course DOES cover CPR requirements for Lifeguards in New York State.
CPR FOR THE PROFESSIONAL RESCUERS
This course is designed to train professional-level rescuers to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over. This course is required to be taken every year for all lifeguards working in New York State. This course is also accepted by most healthcare facilities as an alternative to the Basic Life Support course. This course is offered in a blended learning format with an online portion that takes approximately 2.5 hours followed by an in person training session that takes 2.5 hours.
Online portion must be completed in its entirety prior to the in person class.
*This course includes an optional first aid add-on which adds 1 more hour to the online portion and 15 more minutes to the in person session.
LIFEGUARDING
Provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. Upon successful completion of this course each participant will receive a two (2) year American Red Cross Certification in Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer as well as First Aid is included. This certification will allow participants to work as a lifeguard at most pools and aquatic facilities in the United States. This course is offered in a blended learning format with an online portion that takes approximately 8 hours followed by a 20 hour in person training spanning over 3 sessions. At the first session, participants must pass a pretest consisting of 300 yards front crawl or breaststroke, 2 minutes of treading with no hands, and a timed brick retrieval.
Online portion must be completed in its entirety prior to the in person class.
LIFEGUARDING REVIEW
The purpose of this course is to help participants achieve recertification in Lifeguard Training without having to take the full content course. This review course includes First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. This course is offered in a fully in person format, with one session lasting approximately 10 hours. At the start of the session, participants must pass a pretest consisting of 300 yards front crawl or breaststroke, 2 minutes of treading with no hands, and a timed brick retrieval.
Participants must hold current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification that is no more than 30 days past the expiration date.
