The men's golf team makes its third appearance on New York University's Top-50 Varsity Sports Highlight List of 2019-20 with its season-ending victory at the Skidmore Invitational.
Having debuted at #39 with its win at the Duke Nelson Invitational and reappearing at #36 with its season-opening victory at the St. Lawrence Invitational, the team returns to the list with its outstanding performance on October 12-13 at the par-72 Saratoga National Golf Course in Saratoga Springs, NY.
After running into some tough luck on day one of the event (shooting 295 and ending the round in fourth place of nine teams), the Violets' fortunes changed on Sunday when they put up the single greatest round of golf in the school's history. The men cut 13 strokes off their game for a second-round total of 282 and a grand-total of 577. This not only gave them the lowest single-round score in team history (besting the 2017 team's 288 mark at that year's Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship), but was also enough to secure the lowest 36-hole tournament score in team history (topping the men's 579 total at the Duke Nelson Invitational back on September 15).
Leading the way for the Violets was first-place finisher (out of 45 competitors)
Joseph Burlison (Salinas, CA/Palma) (Salinas, CA/Palma). Fresh off a Saturday performance that saw him tie John Pharr's 13-year-old record for the lowest single-round score in school history (67), Burlison played another incredible round on Sunday en route to besting another one of Pharr's records. Burlison's second-round total of four-under-par 68 left him at 135 for the tournament, five strokes lower than Pharr's previous 36-hole record.
