The countdown of New York University's top-50 highlights of the 2019-20 varsity sports season continues with the women's soccer team's dominant performance in its home opener.
Following a 2018 campaign in which they advanced to the NCAA Tournament, the Violets got off on the right feet in a spectacular way in 2019. After playing their first four games on the road and winning three of them, the squad played its home opener on September 15 at Gaelic Park.
Isabelle Turner's (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Pine Crest) goal at the 7:20 mark began an offensive onslaught that the team had not experienced in nearly seven years. For the first time since September 25, 2012 (a 10-3 win over the College of Staten Island) NYU scored in double-digits and defeated St. Joseph's College-LI by a score of 10-1.
Turner,
Gabriella Funk (Freemont, CA/Irvington) and
Hadley Bushala (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) each scored two goals as the Violets tallied four in the first half and tickled the twines six times in the second.
A solid NYU defense allowed only two shots on goal in the victory.
