Wrestling Earns #3 on The Top-50 Highlight List

Grapplers Take Third at Northeast Regionals and Qualify Four Wrestlers for NCAA Championships

The wrestling team makes its fourth appearance on New York University's Top-50 Varsity Sports Highlight List of 2019-20 (this time at #3) after placing third at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships hosted by Rhode Island College in Providence, RI, February 29-March 1.

For a record-tying fourth time in team history, NYU had four wrestlers finish in the top three in their brackets, thus automatically qualifying for the NCAA National Championships (which were later canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic).

In the team scoring, NYU finished third out of 17 schools with 122 points, just half-a-point behind the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Johnson & Wales University took first place with 168 points. It marked the fourth time in program history that NYU finished among the top three.

Overall, NYU wrestlers went 29-15 at the Championships.

NYU's top performer was senior Sean Lyons (Sewell, NJ/St. Joseph's Prep). After previously finishing as the runner-up in 2018, he took the 157-pound title in 2020 by winning all four of his matches, two by fall and two by technical fall. For his efforts, Lyons was voted Most Outstanding Wrestler.

"Lyons proved this weekend that he is a title contender," remarked Senior Assistant Coach Corey Luce. "Not only does he expect to win, he expects to dominate."

NYU also had a trio of wrestlers finish in third place: senior Evan Drill (Neshanic Station, NJ/Somerville) (149), senior Jack La Corte (Monmouth Beach, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) (197) and sophomore Izaake Zuckerman (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) (174).

"I'm very proud of the way our wrestlers responded after a very tough semifinal round," added Luce. "We told these guys to get the next best thing, and that's what they did."

All four wrestlers were subsequently named All-Americans after the NCAA Championships were canceled.

For helping guide the team to such tremendous success, Luce was named NCAA Northeast Region Championships Assistant Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career.

"Well-deserved honor for Corey," noted Head Coach Bruce Haberli. "I'm very fortunate to have him by my side, and our team is fortunate to have him as a coach."

The wrestling team originally appeared on the Top-50 Highlight List at #38, #20 and #8 (see below).
