The women's tennis team makes its third appearance on New York University's Top-50 Varsity Sports Highlight List of 2019-20 at #4 with its singles and doubles victories at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Championships in Geneva, NY, from Saturday-Monday, September 21-23.
NYU freshman
Karina Jensrud (Olso, Norway/Laurel Springs School (Ojai, CA)) won the singles title, while the duo of junior
Anna Maria Buraya (Toronto, Canada/Bayview Glenn School) and freshman
Anastasiia Balyk (Odessa, Ukraine/Boca Prep International) captured the doubles crown to qualify for the ITA Oracle Cup National Championships and secure All-America honors.
Jensrud won six matches over the three days to take the title. She defeated two of her teammates along the way (
Judy Kam (Beijing, China/University) in the quarterfinals and Buraya in the semifinals) before rallying in the finals to overtake Miriam Gandham of Vassar College 4-6, 7-5, 6-0.
"Karina showed a lot of resolve and resilience after a slow start," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "Her opponent had opportunities to close out in the second set, but Karina adapted her game and was able to pull out the close second. Then, the third set was pretty straight forward after that.
"She showed a lot of poise throughout the tournament," Choy added.
It took five matches for Buraya and Balyk to claim their doubles title. The duo produced a comeback victory over their opponents from Skidmore College in the final match to secure their path to Nationals. The Violet pair dropped the first set 6-2, but rebounded to take the next two 6-0 and 6-2, taking 11-straight games at one point.
"They got off to a slow start, but then stepped up and controlled the match," Choy explained. "Anna has a lot of experience in big matches and Anastasiia shows amazing composure for a freshman. She has ice water in her veins."
The women's tennis team had previously appeared on the Top-50 List at #34 and #7 (see below).
