The New York University men's fencing squad delivered a strong performance on February 7, at the Beguinet Classic, hosted by Duke University in Durham, NC. Facing a competitive field that included Penn State, Air Force, Notre Dame, the University of North Carolina, Boston College and Brandeis University, the Violets competed against several nationally recognized programs.
NYU opened the meet with a 17–10 victory over Penn State before defeating Air Force, 14–13. The Violets fell to Notre Dame, 19–8, and the University of North Carolina, 16–11. Against Boston College, NYU fell 16–11 despite claiming epee by a 7–2 margin. The Violets closed out the meet with a 14–13 victory over Brandeis.
Szymon Wojciechowski led the epee group with nine wins throughout the meet. Julius DeStefano and Ajit Sivakumar also contributed in epee, each recording six victories. In saber, Surya Mattoo paced the Violets with 10 wins, while Jerry Pan added eight. In foil, Adam Wong led the squad with nine wins, and Farr Dickson contributed six.
"The team battled through an exceptionally tough field today and demonstrated outstanding mental resilience," said Head Coach Ben Bratton. "I'm incredibly proud of how they competed. A lot of our fencers made meaningful progress toward NCAA Regional qualification, which positions us well heading into the next few weeks."
The Violets will fence again on February 22 at the LIU Shark Showdown, hosted by Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY.
