The New York University men's fencing team opened competition at the 2026 NCAA Fencing Championships on Saturday, March 21, in South Bend, IN.
Representing the Violets in the two-day national event are Szymon Wojciechowski in epee and Jerry Pan in saber.
Wojciechowski entered the championships following a dominant postseason run, highlighted by his NCAA Northeast Regional epee title. In the opening round-robin bouts, he battled through a highly competitive field and finished the first day of competition with a 9–6 record and currently sits in 10th place.
"Szymon had a really strong start today," said Head Coach Ben Bratton. "After a tough second round, he did a great job regrouping and picked up some big wins that put him in a good position heading into the final rounds."
In saber, Pan posted a 2–13 record on the first day of competition and is currently ranked 24th in his weapon group.
"Jerry had a challenging start, but you could see him start to find his rhythm toward the end of the day," Bratton noted. "We're hoping he can find some consistency going into rounds four and five tomorrow and finish his NYU career on a high note."
Through the first day of competition, NYU stands at 18th in the overall team standings among the 26 qualifying programs.
The men's competition follows the conclusion of the women's event on Friday, where Katherine Chen represented NYU and finished 14th overall in epee with 11 victories.
Wojciechowski and Pan will complete the final eight rounds of pool play on Sunday, March 22.
Following the conclusion of round-robin play, the top four finishers in each weapon will advance to the semifinal and championship bouts to determine the individual national champions.
