Violets Shine Across Men’s and Women’s Weapons, NCAA Nationals on the Horizon

The New York University men's and women's fencing teams competed at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships on Sunday, March 8, at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY.

The meet featured fencers from all three NCAA Divisions aiming to solidify their qualification for the NCAA National Championships later this month.

NYU was led by a standout performance from Szymon Wojciechowski, who captured the regional title in men's epee. Wojciechowski worked through a highly competitive field to claim the first Northeast Regional Championship in his rookie season.

"I'm really proud of how our team competed today," said Head Coach Ben Bratton. "Szymon delivered an outstanding performance against a very strong field to win the regional title."

Jordan Macarty also competed in men's epee and placed 13th overall, while Ajit Sivakumar finished 18th and Julius DeStefano tied for 23rd.

In men's saber, Surya Mattoo led the Violets with a 12th-place finish, followed closely by Jerry Pan in 13th. Vincent Hong placed 34th, while Zhenhao Liu finished 43rd.

"We had several athletes produce solid results in very deep fields," Bratton said. "There were a lot of competitive bouts throughout the day."

Anup Banerjee paced NYU in men's foil with a 14th-place result, while Adam Wong finished 15th. Farr Dickson placed 27th and Anders Yu tied for 30th.

On the women's side, Katherine Chen recorded the top finish for the Violets with a ninth-place result in epee. Azniv Basralian finished 15th, while Lily Papadakis placed 21st and Hiba Hafeez came in 29th.

Greta Yuan led NYU in women's saber with a 19th-place finish, followed by Liisa Hambazaza in 23rd. Rosemarie Benciu placed 32nd and Sophia Luker finished 36th.

Aurora Aschettino was NYU's top finisher in women's foil, placing 29th. Audrey Shitamoto finished 37th, Claudia Meyer placed 39th and Emily Luo finished 41st.

"We also had several finishes that put us in position for NCAA qualification," Bratton added. "We'll learn more in the coming days."

The official announcement of the fencers who qualified will be made by the NCAA on Tuesday, March 10.

The NCAA National Championships begin on Thursday, March 19, at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN.
