Talebi Wins NYU's Second National Championship, Team Finishes Fourth

Violets Score Four All-Americans

The New York University wrestling team wrapped up its season with a program record fourth-place finish out of 62 teams at the 2026 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse in Cedar Rapids, IA.

The finish marks the best team result in program history, surpassing the previous high of 11th place in 2024.

Mo Talebi earned the program's second individual national championship in the 197 lb weight class. Talebi outlasted York (PA)'s Josh Stahl to score a 10-5 decision in the final and became the Violets' first National Champion since Nathan Pike in 2017.

Four Violets (Alexander Diaz, Ty Finn, Talebi, and Justin Mayes) secured All-America honors, the most in program history at the National Championships.

Diaz finished third in the nation at 125 lbs. After dropping an earlier match to Coe's Brayden Parke, Diaz battled back through the consolation bracket and defeated Manchester's Mason Jones 9-3 in the third-place match to secure his spot on the podium. He finished the season with a 33-1 record.

At 174 lbs, Finn finished fifth in the nation. He capped off a strong tournament recording multiple wins throughout the two-day championships.

Mayes earned All-America honors at 184 pounds and finished eighth overall in the national field. He opened the tournament with a 10-2 major decision over Wisconsin Stevens Point's Easton Hull before continuing his run in the consolation bracket.

Associate Head Coach Corey Luce spoke about the impact of NYU's graduate students Ty Finn and Justin Mayes

"Ty and Justin made a great impact on our program coming in as graduates. It didn't feel like their first year, and they boosted our team culture and were great additions," Luce said.

The NCAA Championships featured 62 teams from across Division III competing for national titles over the two-day event in Cedar Rapids.
