Sophomore Hangs Tough in Round of 32

Victoria Wang of the New York University women's tennis team fell in the opening round of the NCAA Division III women's singles championship on Friday, May 22, in Chattanooga, TN.

The sophomore faced Lauren Long of Washington & Lee University and played two strong sets, ultimately losing 7-6 (4), 7-5.

"The match was close," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "Both players had chances and it was just a point here or there."

After Wang opened the first set up 4-2, Long won the next three games to take a 5-4 edge. Wang then broke back to go back up 6-5 before her opponent held serve to force a tiebreak. Long went on take the set with a 7-4 tiebreak victory.

In the second frame, Wang recorded two early breaks to take a 5-2 advantage. However, Long went on to win the final five games and clinched the match.

"The loss shouldn't take away from the year Vic had," added Choy. "To qualify for the ITA Cup and NCAA's is not easy. Just a sophomore, she will have more chances."

The Markham, Ontario, Canada, native finishes her season with a 16-10 singles record, including 7-5 in tournaments.
