Golf Teams Complete Day One at Jekyll Island

NYU women tied for 6th, men tied for 20th

Taking the course for the second time this spring, New York University's men's and women's golf teams wrapped up the first day of competition at the Jekyll Island Invitational at the Jekyll Island Golf Club on the Georgia coast.

The Violet women are tied for sixth as a team with Sewanee University after round one (301 strokes), trailing first place Emory University, who recently won the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, by 12 strokes.

Nalinda Wanikpun sits in a five-way tie for 19th individually, shooting a two-over par 74. Madison Phung is right behind her with 75 strokes, tied with eight others for 24th.

Aliea Clark and Mimi Chen both shot four-over (76), placing them among the top third of the leaderboard in a tie for 32nd. Camilla Chung rounded out the Violets' scoring, shooting 79 on the day (t-60th).

NYU's men are knotted with Skidmore College and Greensboro College at 300 strokes (20th), while UAA foes Emory and Carnegie Mellon University are tied for first (289).

Robbie Keyes shined for the Violets throughout the first round as he sits two strokes under par (70) and is tied for 13th individually. Joseph Burlison had a strong day as well, also shooting under par (71) and is locked in an 11-way tie for 27th.

Jorge Montero (79), Chris Lee (80) and Andy Yang (81) make up the rest of NYU's lineup.

There are 120 women and 150 men competing at the Invitational.

Another set of Violet golfers are in action this weekend, playing in the Individual Invitational that does not impact team scoring.

All four of NYU's individual women are among the top 15: Charlotte Kwong (78, t-second), Michelle Zhou (80, t-fifth), Isabel Herrera (81, t-eighth), and Summer Yang (85, t-15th). There are 36 entrants on the women's side of the individual competition.

A pair of Violet men are among the top eight in the individual tournament, as Charles Hsieh sits tied for third at 74 strokes while Kevin Kim is tied for eighth (75).

Day two of play at the Jekyll Island Golf Club continues tomorrow morning.
