A newcomer to the New York University Men's Golf Team made his collegiate debut a special one.
Kevin Kim (Katy, TX/James E. Taylor), playing his first round of golf for the Violets, shot a one-under-par 71 as NYU began competition at the Liberty League Preview on Saturday, October 2, at the Turning Stone Shenendoah Golf Course in Verona, NY.
Kim recorded three birdies during the round and is tied for second individually in the 42-player competition.
His performance has helped the Violets (293) to a second-place standing, trailing only Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) by two strokes.
"I would classify Kevin's play as 'boring golf,'" said Head Coach
Katie Rudolph. "And, I mean that in a positive way. He hit the fairways. He hit the greens. He made his putts. There were no frills. Just a great start to his college career."
Kim had lots of help from his teammates in helping the Violets produce a strong round.
Chris Lee (Palisades Park, NJ/Bergen Catholic) shot even par for the Violets and is tied for fourth place.
Andy Yang (Sugar Land, TX/Clements) shot one over and is tied for seventh.
Joseph Burlison (Salinas, CA/Palma) shot five-over-par and is tied for 13th place.
"On this course, you have to be really disciplined in your placement of shots. It's a very unique course," Rudolph explained. "It's a shot-makers golf course, and our guys stayed disciplined all day and made a lot of quality shots."
The second and final round of the seven-team tournament will be played on Sunday.
