The New York University women's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw against #10 Vassar College on Saturday, September 19, in Poughkeepsie, NY.
In the 23rd minute, Lauren Ziemianski took a shot to the low left of the goal which Vassar's Laura Shea was able to keep out.
Sydney Freese had a chance of her own in the 42nd minute but the teams remained tied 0-0 going into the locker rooms at halftime.
The Brewers led the way in the first 45 minutes in possession and several dangerous chances. NYU Goalkeeper Maddy Tohanczyn registered four saves in the first half, backing up her back line to keep Vassar off the score sheet
"Credit to Vassar. They were really aggressive and played with a high level of intensity from the first to the last minute," said Head Coach Scott Waddell. "We took some time before we found our footing in the game.."
NYU came out strong in the second half, battling to find their way towards the goal. The opportunity came with a free kick right outside of the box, but Vassar was able to block the shot. The Violets were quick on the rebound to keep possession on their side.
Another attempt came a few minutes later off a corner kick where Meredith Theis got on the ball but it was deflected away. Freese found the rebound, taking a shot of her own that was saved to keep it even.
With two minutes left, the Violets continued to push with Freese getting her final opportunity. However, Vassar was able to hold strong and keep the match scoreless.
Freese led with three shots and Julia Spang followed with two. Five other Violets recorded a shot.
Tohanczyn ended the match with five saves between the posts.
The Violets return home tomorrow, Sunday, September 20, where they will take on University of Mount Saint Vincent. Kickoff is set for 5 pm.
