The New York University men's swimming and diving team closed out a week of competition at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday, March 22, at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in North Carolina.
The Violets matched the program's best-ever finish at the National Championships, taking fourth place overall.
Denison University won the championship with 463.5 points, followed by Emory University with 323.5 points, the University of Chicago with 272 and NYU with 267.5 points.
I'm incredibly proud of this team—they worked so hard all year long and swam unbelievably fast," said Head Coach
Trevor Miele. "It was amazing coaching this group, and while we'll miss our graduating seniors, I'm excited to climb the rankings again next year. We have some unfinished business left!"
The 400 freestyle relay team (Pierce Downs, Maksym Nechydyuk, Ajay Watanakun, Greg Wehbe) gave it their all in the final race of the weekend, surging from the eighth-best preliminary time to a fifth-place finish in the final. Downs broke an NYU record in the 100 free with his opening leg of the relay (48.38) and helped the team to All-America ranks.
Connor Vincent was just 0.21 seconds from a bronze finish in the mile swim, taking fourth with a 15:22.75 time. He earned All-America honors for his swim. Evan Jue finished 11th and received All-America Honorable Mention.
Nechydyuk improved on his preliminary qualifying for the 200 breaststroke, dropping 0.66 seconds off his morning time and placing third with a 1:57.60 time. He also earned All-America honors. Victor Derani was an All-American, placing seventh with a 1:57.09 time in the final.
The team's fourth-place finish matches the 2024 result as the highest placements at the National Championships in program history
