It was an outstanding Sunday for the New York University women's golf team, as the Violets won the Vassar College Invitational and graduate student
Aliea Clark snared the individual title.
Trailing by four strokes heading into Sunday's second and final round at the par-72, 5,810-yard Casperkill Golf Club in Poughkeepsie, NY,
12th-ranked NYU rallied past #9 Amherst College to pull out the one-stroke victory (618-619).
"I'm really happy for the team. We hung in there and stayed mentally strong until the very last hole in extremely challenging conditions," said Head Coach
Katie Rudolph.
Leading that effort was Clark, competing in only her third competition in her first season as a Violet. After shooting a two-over 74 on Saturday and entering Sunday's round two strokes behind the leader, Williams College's Gio Kim, Clark shot another 74 on Sunday and finished at 148, three strokes ahead of Amherst's Gihoe Seo.
Overall, 10 teams and 58 golfers competed.
"I'm thrilled for Aliea to win her first Division III college event," Rudolph added. Clark attended UCLA as an undergrad. "She's had such a positive impact on this team after just joining us this spring."
Clark had lots of support from her teammates, as both
Nalinda Wanikpun and
Michelle Zhou shot 156 and tied for sixth place.
Summer Yang finished 18th (162), while
Isabel Herrera (164) tied for 21st.
"This was a true team effort," Rudolph concluded.
The Violets return to action next weekend when they compete at the Jack Leaman Invitational hosted by Amherst.
