The New York University Women's Golf Team finished third and
Nalinda Wanikpun (Bangkok, Thailand/Loomis Chaffee School) placed second individually as the Violets completed competition at the George Phinney Classic, which was held Saturday and Sunday, September 18-19, at the Ralph Myhre Golf Course in Middlebury, VT.
After 36 holes, Wanikpun was tied for the lead at 152 (75-77) with Jessica Huang of Amherst College, but was defeated in a playoff.
"It was exciting to get back out to play," said Wanikpun, who was competing for only the second time this season. "It was a great opportunity to learn more about myself and the game."
NYU (634), currently
ranked #10 in the nation by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (PDF)(WGCA), finished two strokes behind second-place #15 Amherst (632) and 14 behind tournament champion #5 Williams College (620).
"This was a great experience for our team to learn from," said Head Coach
Katie Rudolph. "Collectively, we have made a decision to get better around the greens."
Madison Phung (Frisco, TX/Lebanon Trail) (157, 77-80) also posted a top-10 finish for the Violets, tying for eight place. Also competing for NYU were
Charlotte Kwong (Hong Kong/Kent School) (tied 16th, 162),
Isabel Herrera (Wellington, FL/American Heritage School Boca/Delray) (tied 19th, 163) and
Camilla Chung (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatian College Prep) (tied 30th, 167).
"I'm happy for Nalinda to tie for the low score individually," Rudolph added. "She was the glue that kept us in this weekend."
Overall, 12 teams and 68 golfers competed on the par-71 course.
The Violets return to action on Saturday and Sunday, October 2-3, when they compete at the Williams College Invitational in Williamstown, MA.
