Following a winless campaign the previous year, the 2012-13 New York University women's tennis team posted its best record in four seasons and began to ascend in the Division III rankings.
The Violets posted a winning regular-season mark before ultimately finishing the year with a 5-6 record in dual matches. NYU concluded its season as the #13 ranked squad in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Region ranking. This represented the first time the team had finished a season in the regional rankings since 2010, when NYU completed the year at #19.
The Violets opened the season with tournament play, which included an appearance at the
NYSWCCA Championships in Ithaca, NY. The team earned four titles at the tournament; including sophomore
Mari Tzakis taking the #3 singles crown and freshman
Madeline King winning #4 singles. The duo also combined to win at #2 doubles, while senior
Ariel Sultan and junior
Ramya Pokala captured #3 doubles.
After concluding tournament play in the fall, the Violets began their dual match schedule in the spring. NYU dropped three of its first four matches, including a
6-3 loss to University Athletic Association (UAA) rival University of Rochester.
The Violets rebounded from their sluggish start by earning a decisive
8-1 victory in their home opener against the Stevens Institute of Technology.
NYU then went on a late-season run which saw them win four consecutive matches, beginning with a
6-3 victory over William Smith College.
During their win streak, the Violets had arguably their best performance of the season in a
9-0 shutout of Ithaca College. Tzakis, King, and freshmen
Ashley Masanto and
Alison Wang led the charge, as they all earned singles and doubles wins.
The four-match winning streak (and the regular season) concluded with 5-4 victories over
SUNY Geneseo and
Wilkes University.
NYU entered post-season play as winners of five of its final six matches and a record of 5-3. Despite its strong play late in the season, the team was awarded the #8 seed against a loaded field in the UAA Championship.
The Violets opened the tournament by
falling to the top seed and eventual National Runner-up Emory University by the score of 9-0. NYU also had its hands full in the next match and was
defeated by the #5 seed Case Western Reserve University 8-1. In the seventh-place match, the Violets faced off against Rochester for the second time of the season. Unfortunately,
NYU was again beaten by the same 6-3 score.
Despite a disappointing end to the season, the campaign featured a great deal of individual success. Wang and Tzakis tied for the team lead in singles wins, as both compiled records of 8-3 at the #2 and #3 spots, respectively.
In doubles play, Tzakis and King combined to lead the squad in wins as they compiled an overall record of 12-6. The duo posted 6-3 records in both the #2 spot in dual matches, as well as in tournament play.
Playing primarily at #1 doubles, Wang and Masanto had a 5-6 record in dual matches, while earning an overall record of 11-8 when factoring in tournament play.
Considering all of the contributions from his underclassmen, Head Coach
Horace Choy will see an experienced, veteran squad that will try to climb in the UAA rankings next season.
"We had a lot of first-year players on this year's roster who now understand what it will take to get us to the next level," said Choy.
The Violets also had success off the court, as King, Sultan and Tzakis were named to the Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Committee Fall Honor Roll. Additionally, Tzakis and
Alexandra Ziarko earned UAA Spring Sport All-Academic honors, while
Sultan received the Student-Athlete Academic Achievement Award.
