Fencers Begin First Day of NCAA Championships

Banerjee Represents NYU Men's Team

Two New York University fencers are competing at the NCAA Championships, which are being hosted by Penn State University in University Park, PA, Thursday-Sunday, March 20-23.

The first two days are comprised solely of the men's competition, with the women taking over on Saturday and Sunday. The final team scores are a combination of the women's and men's totals.

Anup Banerjee, fencing in foil, was the Violets' sole representative for the men's team on Thursday. He competed in 15 bouts and was able to secure four victories in the toughest competition of the year.

In the first round, Banerjee fenced seven times with a single victory against Emmer Chase of Notre Dame. In the second round, he fenced four times, losing all four bouts. In the day's final round Banerjee turned it up a notch, winning three of his four match-ups with victories over Ethan Leung of Wayne State University, Thomas Craley of Lawrence University, and Solin Li of Ohio State University.

"As expected, the competition at this event was intense," said Head Coach Ben Bratton. "After a tough start, Anup battled through the first day, securing crucial wins that I believe will give him momentum heading into the final two rounds."

Banerjee will fence again tomorrow for his final day of competition.

Maria Stamos will be representing the Violets in women's foil starting on Saturday.
