Men's Fencing Wrapped Up at NCAA Championships

Banerjee Finishes Off a Great Season

Two New York University fencers are competing at the NCAA Championships, hosted by Penn State University in University Park, PA, Thursday-Sunday, March 20-23.

As day two comes to a close, the men's half of the event wraps up, and the Violets' Anup Banerjee finishes off a solid season.

Banerjee competed in eight bouts in men's foil on the tournament's second day. In the fourth round, he split the bouts with a 2-2 record and secured victories over Dayaal Singh and Joseph Glasson of Duke University. For the fifth and final round before the final four, Banerjee went 0-4.

His overall record for the tournament was 6-17, and he finished 22 of 24 among men's foil fencers.

Coming into the tournament, Banerjee had a season record of 37-14 and was the lone Violet to qualify for the National Championships...as a freshman!

"Anup gave it everything he had today," said ead Coach Ben Bratton. "The result might not reflect his full potential, but his effort, resilience, and attitude stood out. As a freshman, his future is incredibly bright. This is just the beginning."

At the end of day two, NYU finds itself in 22nd place among 26 teams. The University of Notre Dame holds first place.

The tournament's third day begins tomorrow, as women's fencing will be underway starting at 9 am.

Maria Stamos will be fencing in women's foil for the Violets.
