New York University's fencers wrapped up competition at the NCAA Championships, hosted by Penn State University in University Park, PA, Thursday-Sunday, March 20-23.
The women's team's representative,
Maria Stamos, finished off her second day of competition today, marking the end of the NYU fencing season.
On day three, Stamos finished with an 8-7 record and placed 12th among 24 fencers in women's foil through the first three rounds on Saturday.
Then, on Sunday, Stamos ended the day with a record of 4-4 and remained 12th in her weapon. That result earned her All-America Honorable Mention.
Her wins on Sunday came against Crystal Qian of Stanford and Katherine Kim of University of California San Diego. These were some of the best fencers in women's foil, with Qian being the 2nd seed and Kim the 4th seed. She also secured victories over Ludovica Mancini of Wayne State University and Ariadna Tucker Alarcon of Notre Dame. Going into the tournament, Mancini and Alarcon were seeded 6th and 8th, respectively.
Stamos ended the tournament with a 12-11 overall record.
"Maria closed out the weekend with another strong day, capping off a great performance at the event," said Head Coach
Ben Bratton. "Her consistency and resilience across both days earned her Honorable Mention All-American honors—a well-deserved recognition of her hard work and competitive spirit."
The men's team representative,
Anup Banerjee, won six bouts and finished 22 of 24 in foil, after the men's competition ended on Saturday.
Together, NYU's two fencers accumulated 150 points as NYU placed 21st of 33 teams.
