Fencers Complete Season at NCAA Championships

Violets Finish in 14th Place

Four New York University fencers completed their competition at the NCAA Championships, which were hosted by Ohio State University in Columbus, OH, Thursday-Sunday, March 21-24.

The first two days were comprised solely of the women's competition, with the men taking over on Saturday and Sunday. The final team scores are a combination of the women's and men's totals.

After Sunday's final rounds, NYU accumulated 33 points and finished in 14th place.

The Violets finished two points ahead of 15th-place Brandeis University and three points behind 13th-place Cornell University in the 27-team competition.

All three NCAA Divisions competed, with NYU finishing first among all Division III squads.

Harvard University won the title with 169 points.

A pair of Violets competed in foil, while another duo took part in saber.

Adam Wong was NYU's top performer, finishing in 17th place in foil. He won 10 of his 23 bouts overall. Farr Dickson was the other Violet competing in foil and he took 21st place with eight victories.

In saber, Kevin Zu won eight bouts and finished in 18th place while Jerry Pan collected seven wins and wound up in 21st place.

"We improved on our result from last year without any epee fencers and without any of our women qualifying," said Head Coach Ben Bratton. The Violets finished 17th at the 2003 NCAA Championships. "I was hoping we would do better, but we have improved and still finished top-15 and first among all Division III schools. I think our fencing program is in a good place and has a bright future."
