Nine NYU Cross Country Runners Receive All-Academic Award

USTFCCCA Honors Athletes Based on GPA and Regional Championship Performance

Four men and five women from the New York University cross country teams have earned All-Academic honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The distinction is awarded to student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher and who finished in the top quartile of their regional championship meet. The USTFCCCA is honoring 320 men representing 119 universities in NCAA Division III and 383 women from 137 DIII schools.

On the NYU women's team, Janie Cooper (Fr., Liberal Studies), Leah Haley (Sr., Psychology), Hannah Marin (Grad., Physical Therapy), Grace Richardson (Grad., Occupational Therapy), and Daniela Sekhar (Fr., Biomolecular and Chemical Engineering) all received the honor.

Richardson placed ninth of 166 runners at the NCAA Niagara Regional on November 12, while Cooper placed 11th, Haley finished 15th, Sekhar was 19th, and Marin took 25th.

The Violets' second-place regional finish earned the team a spot at the NCAA DIII National Championship the following week for the first time in a decade. Richardson became the program's first All-American since 2013 with her 37th-place finish out of 292 women. Cooper (175th), Sekhar (187th), Haley (189th), and Marin (252nd) also represented the Violets.

Aidin Hasan (So., Liberal Studies), Shaurya Srivastava (Fr., Business), Andrew Taylor (Fr., Liberal Studies), and Ryan Tobin (So., Film & Television) made the USTFCCCA All-Academic list from the men's team.

At the Niagara Regional, Tobin was third in a race of 172 while Hasan placed 17th. Srivastava and Taylor finished 37th and 38th, respectively.

Tobin was the men's lone qualifier for the DIII Championship, where he improved on his 2021 performance with a 138th-place finish out of 292 competitors.

In addition to the individual honors, both the women's and men's squads were named All-Academic Teams. The women earned a cumulative GPA of 3.7 in the most recent grading period while the men totaled 3.456 to surpass the minimum requirement of 3.1.
