The United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) have announced its 2021-22 All-Americans and Team Awards.
Both the New York University Men's and Women's Fencing Teams were named Division III Teams of the Year following their combined 11th-place national finish at the NCAA Championships in South Bend, IN, on March 24-27. That finish was tops among all NCAA Division III programs.
Individually, 12 NYU student-athletes, six from each team, earned USFCA All-America honors.
"These awards cap off an outstanding year for the NYU Fencing Program," said Head Coach
Steve Mormando. "Not only did we have a great result at the NCAA Championships, but throughout the season as well. The success of our teams and student-athletes are being rewarded, and I couldn't be prouder."
Athletes automatically earned All-America honors by finishing among the top 12 of their respective events at the NCAA Championships. In addition, the top Division III fencers in the country were recognized based on their regular and postseason performances.
In epee,
Ian Sanders was named a First Team All-American after earning a bronze medal at the NCAA Championships. Sanders and
Liam Carpenter both earned Division III First Team honors for Men's Epee, while
Sarah Tong earned Division III First Team honors for Women's Epee.
Anna Lanzman also earned Division III Honorable Mention.
Sanders ended his career at NYU with the most epee victories in program history (153) and second-most total victories after a 34-28 season record. His success at the NCAA Championships was instrumental in leading NYU to its best postseason finish since 2017, when the team also finished 11th overall.
Carpenter etched his name in the NYU record books this year as he now sports a career epee win percentage of .635, the fifth-highest mark all time. The senior finished the year 27-12, going 26-12 in epee and a perfect 1-0 in his lone saber bout.
Lanzman led the women's team in epee wins, sporting a 34-35 record for the year. The junior currently has a .628 career win percentage, the fourth-highest in program history. Tong finished her freshman season with a 12-16 record, and was a key piece in the win over University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Brandeis University on January 30, posting a 4-2 mark against the Judges.
In saber,
Jamie Ren earned Honorable Mention All-America honors after placing ninth at the NCAA Championships. He also earned First Team Division III honors alongside
Kevin Zu.
Mari Binstock earned Second Team Division III All-America accolades for women's saber, while
Leanne Chan garnered Division III Honorable Mention.
Ren led NYU in saber wins, posting a 34-19 mark for the season. The junior was a key factor in the Violets' success at the Eric Sollee Invitational on February 1, posting eight wins on the day. Zu ended the year with an impressive 23-4 season record, and his win percentage (.851) set the NYU mark for the best single-season saber win percentage, topping Assistant Coach
Grant Williams' .829 record from the 2017-18 season.
Binstock and Chan each posted more than 20 wins on the year, finishing 27-21 and 21-24, respectively. Both fencers shined in their first year of intercollegiate competition.
In foil, two fencers from each team earned Division III First Team All-America honors.
Maria Stamos and
Polly Adler were recognized on the women's side, while
Andrew Sledeski and
Oliver Hu were tabbed from the men's team.
Stamos posted a team-high 42 wins in her debut season. The sophomore currently sports the fourth-highest career foil win percentage in program history (.700). Adler finished the year with a 20-22 record, highlighted by a 4-2 showing at the Shark Showcase hosted by Long Island University on February 6.
Hu led the men's foil team in victories, compiling a 25-24 season mark. The freshman picked up a team-high 15 wins at the Philadelphia Invitational on January 22-23. Sledeski finished his rookie season with a 15-13 record, picking up six wins at the Shark Showcase.
"To finish as the highest Division III school in the nation and barely out of the top 10 overall at Nationals showed the spirit and quality of our student-athletes," Mormando added. "These All-America honors are well-deserved. Our fencers worked hard not only this year but over the past few years to compete against and to beat some of the best fencers our sport has to offer. It is good to see that the USFCA is recognizing not only us, but all of the Division III programs who are competing against top Division I schools throughout the year."
