The New York University Men's and Women's Fencing Teams competed at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships on Sunday, March 13, at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY.
Vying for berths to the NCAA National Championships on March 24-27 at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN, several Violets staked their claims to those spots on Sunday.
"We should be qualifying five fencers with two alternates," revealed Head Coach
Steve Mormando. "
Maria Stamos,
Jamie Ren,
Kevin Zu,
Ian Sanders, and
Liam Carpenter will all go to Nationals with
Polly Adler and
Brian Kim as alternates. What a great day for NYU Fencing. Lots of hard work by all!"
Qualification for Nationals is not based solely on the fencers' performances at Regionals, as the body of work from the entire season is taken into consideration as well.
"It's important for the fencers to at least make the Round of 12 at Regionals," Mormando explained. "But, it's not the definitive requirement."
All of the Violets' projected qualifiers reached the Round of 12 in their respective weapons:
- Ren finished 6th in sabre
- Carpenter finished 7th in epee
- Sanders finished 8th in epee
- Zu finished 10th in saber
- Stamos finished 11th in foil
The official announcement of NCAA National qualifiers will be made on Tuesday.
