The New York University Men's Golf Team, back on the course for the first time since 2019, has taken a commanding lead after the first round of play at the St. Lawrence University Invitational, which is being held at the Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course in Canton, OH, on Saturday and Sunday, September 4-5.
The Violets took three of the top six individual spots and and five of the top-10 in posting a first-round score of 292. They lead second-place St. Lawrence by 15 strokes in the six-team competition.
"This was a very exciting day for the team," said Head Coach
Katie Rudolph, who is in her first season at the helm. "Everyone's having such a good time that even after we were done we stayed around for another hour and a half just chipping and putting and enjoying each other's company. It's been so long since they've had this opportunity."
Leading the way for NYU is newcomer
Jorge Montero (Madrid, Spain/Logos International School). The junior transfer carded a four-under-par 68, one stroke off the team record, and leads a field of 36 golfers. Senior
Joseph Burlison (Salinas, CA/Palma), who holds a share of the NYU record (67), is currently in fifth place after shooting 73, while another newcomer, freshman
Rohan Aerrabolu (Plano, TX/Plano West), is sixth (74).
"Jorge really played great today," Rudolph offered. "He really kept the team moving out there. He can really play."
A pair of NYU seniors,
Chris Lee (Palisades Park, NJ/Bergen Catholic) and
Andy Yang (Sugar Land, TX/Clements) (77), are tied for 10th place.
"Everyone was just really excited to get back out there," Rudolph beamed.
The second and final round of the invitational begins at 8:00am on Sunday morning.
