The New York University men's and women's swimming and diving teams found great success during their 2019-20 seasons. The women's team closed out its regular season placing second at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, while the men finished third.
"From the first day of the season I knew we had a special team," said Head Coach
Trevor Miele. "Our student-athletes were focused, hardworking, supportive, and driven."
A total of 26 swimmers were set to compete at the NCAA DIII National Championships before the event was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
On the men's side, 11 swimmers were headed to the NCAA's. The Violets were led by reigning UAA Men's Co-Swimmer of the Year
Giorgio DelGrosso (Keego Harbor, MI/Cranbrook Kingswood), who produced record-breaking, first-place performances in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events at the UAA Championships.
Thomas Pritchard (Durham, NC /Northern Durham ) was also set to participate after shattering the UAA record in the 1,650-yard freestyle by over nine seconds. The previous record-holder, fellow Violets' swimmer
Graham Chatoor (Glencoe, Trinidad/International School of Port Spain), was also scheduled to compete.
"Giorgio's season was amazing. He kept getting better and better and I have no doubt he would have walked away from nationals with NCAA titles," added Miele. "I am really proud of him and I wish he had the opportunity to show the country how fast he is."
As for the men's divers,
Cole Vertin (San Jose, CA/St. Francis) and
Hunter Whitbeck (Acton, MA /Acton-Boxborough Regional ) qualified for the NCAA's after finishing within the top seven at the NCAA Northeast Regional Diving Championships.
The men, who were ranked as high as #6 by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), finished the season at #14 in the nation. The Violets also produced a 3-3 dual meet record and first-place finishes at the NYU Fall Invitational and the Ithaca Bomber Invitational.
For the women, 12 swimmers planned on competing at the NCAA's. Most notable was
Honore Collins (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township), who was looking to defend her national titles in the 200-yard and 400-yard individual medley, as well as the 200-yard butterfly. Collins produced incredible performances at the UAA Championships, where she won five separate events, broke a pair of records and was named UAA Women's Swimmer of the Year.
"Honore pushed herself to another level this year in and out of the pool. The times she was posting in workouts were extraordinary and I think she had at least two NCAA records in her this year," Miele added. "I have no doubt she would have repeated as NCAA Swimmer of the Year."
Newcomer
Jessica Flynn (Charlotte, NC /Charlotte Latin School) had a standout season that resulted in her earning UAA Co-Rookie of the Year honors.
After leading their team to so much success during the UAA Championships, NYU's coaches were named UAA Women's Coaching Staff of the Year while
Todd Kolean headed the UAA Men's Diving Coaching Staff of the Year. In addition, both the men and the women were honored as a CSCAA Scholar All-American Teams.
"I am really going to miss our seniors. They were instrumental in making NYU one of the top programs in the nation," said Miele. "They helped build our program into cohesive, supportive and committed teams and their impact on the program was extraordinary."
The women, who were ranked as high as #5 by the CSCAA, finished the season at #6 in the nation. The Violets produced a 2-4 dual meet record and also produced first-place victories at the NYU Fall Invitational and the Ithaca Bomber Invitational.
"I am so proud of these teams," concluded Miele. "They were a special group, and I am grateful that I had the opportunity to coach them."
