The New York University men's golf team came out on top in the season-opening St. Lawrence Invitational. The two-round tournament took place at the Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course in Canton, NY, on Saturday and Sunday, September 7-8.
After shooting 290 the first day, the Violets carried their momentum into Sunday, shooting 292 for a final tally of 582. St. Lawrence secured second place with 595 while Clarkson University snuck into third with 597.
Robbie Keyes (Louisville, KY/duPont Manual) was NYU's top performer in the tournament and finished in third place overall after shooting 72 on Sunday and one-under par 143 for both days.
"Everyone performed well today," said Assistant Coach Jack Kurtenbach. "We had a wide range of experience out there this weekend, but you wouldn't have been able to tell from the look of it. We're really proud of our freshmen for that."
The rest of the Violets also played well, becoming the only school in the tournament to have each one of its players secure a spot in the top 10. Christian Wentzel (San Clemente, CA/Montverde Academy) finished sixth overall with 147 in the first tournament of his collegiate career. Meanwhile, Joseph Burlison (Salinas, CA/Palma), Alan Chen (Freemont, CA/Mission San Jose), Chris Lee (Palisades Park, NJ/Bergen Catholic), and Matt Shen (Honolulu, HI/Punahou School) all shot 148 and tied for seventh.
Overall, 11 teams and 59 golfers competed.
The Violets will return to action next weekend for the Duke Nelson Invitational at Ralph Myre Golf Course in Middlebury, VT. The tournament will begin at 9 am on Saturday and Sunday, September 14-15.
