The New York University men's golf team has claimed victory in the Skidmore College Fall Invitational at the par-72 Saratoga National Golf Course in Saratoga Springs, NY. The two-day tournament took place over Saturday and Sunday, October 12-13.
After running into some tough luck in day one of the event, shooting 295 and ending round one in fourth out of nine teams, the Violets' fortunes changed on Sunday when they put up the single greatest round of golf in the school's history. The men cut 13 strokes off their game for a second-round total of 282 and a grand-total of 577. This not only gave them the lowest single-round score in team history (besting the 2017 team's 288 mark at that year's Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship), but was also enough to secure the lowest 36-hole tournament score in team history (topping the men's own 579 total at the Duke Nelson Invitational back on September 15 of this year).
Coming in behind NYU were Babson College at 578 and Rensselaer Polytechnic with 588.
Leading the way for the Violets was first-place finisher (out of 45 competitors)
Joseph Burlison (Salinas, CA/Palma). Fresh off a Saturday performance that saw him tie John Pharr's 13-year-old record (set at Hamilton-Shenendoah on 10/8/2006) for the lowest single-round score in school history (67), Burlison played another incredible round on Sunday en route to besting another one of Pharr's records from the same tournament. With a second-round total of four-under-par 68, Burlison's final tally of 135 was five strokes lower than Pharr's, giving him the lowest 36-hole tournament score in NYU history.
"Joey simply had an incredible fall," exclaimed Head Coach
Brad Johnson. "Breaking a record held since 2006 is just amazing!"
It wasn't just Burlison who contributed to NYU's historic day, however. For the third time in his collegiate career,
Robbie Keyes (Louisville, KY/duPont Manual) shot 69, which is the third-lowest single-round score ever by an NYU golfer. His performance on Sunday elevated him 15 spots on the leaderboards, ultimately tying him for ninth.
Chris Lee (Palisades Park, NJ/Bergen Catholic) had a great day on the course as well, shooting one-under-par 71 and rising 10 spots to finish tied for 14th. Also competing were
Alan Chen (Freemont, CA/Mission San Jose), who shot 74 and finished tied for 20th, and
Matt Shen (Honolulu, HI/Punahou School), who finished in 33rd after shooting 80.
"We are definitely looking forward to continuing our successful campaign in the spring," concluded Johnson.
With Sunday's victory, the Violets have officially closed out their fall 2019 season. The men will return to action on Saturday, March 14, when they head to the Hammock Beach Golf Course in Palm Coast, FL, for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship.
