Fencers Finish 12th at NCAA Championships

Two Violets Earn All-America Honors

Official Results

The combined New York University men's and women's fencing teams posted a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Fencing Championships.

The competition, which was held Thursday-Sunday, March 22-25, at Penn State University in University Park, PA, featured teams and fencers representing all three NCAA Divisions.

The Violets totaled 57 team points, good for 12th place of the 27 teams which competed. NYU was the highest-finishing non-Division I school, and fell short of 11th place by only two points behind Stanford University.

The University of Notre Dame won the National Championship with a total of 185 points.

Sunday's final day featured the end of competition for the five NYU men's fencers. The top finisher of the group was freshman Zohaib Mannan, who took 10th place in foil with an overall record of 12-10. That performance earned him All-America status, as the top 12 in each weapon are so honored.

The same status befell junior Grant Williams, who placed 11th in sabre with a 13-10 record. Williams also earned All-America honors with a sixth-place finish in the event last year.

"It was great to see our fencers receive this highly-deserved recognition," said Head Coach Steve Mormando. "Grant has certainly established himself as one of the finest collegiate fencers in the country, and Zohaib was very impressive for his first season and first time at Nationals."

Also fencing for NYU on Sunday was freshman Ian Sanders (18th place, epee), senior captain Philip Shin (18th place, foil) and junior captain Mickey Bak (22nd place, sabre).

NYU's lone women at the competition, Tiffany Luong, finished on Friday and took 15th place in foil.

"Our fencing teams finished the season with many podium results, gold, silver and bronze medals at National US events, the Temple Open, NCAA Regionals, and NIWFA Championships, and concluded with All-America honors at the NCAA Championships," Mormando added. "These are great teams that competes as a teams and support each other in the great tradition of New York University. I am very proud of their support of each other and never quitting even when things looked bleak. The NCAA has upwards of 70 teams in all three divisions mixed together, and we placed 12th In a very strong field. I am very proud of this great group of student-athletes."
