Williams Takes Sabre Gold

Official Results

The New York University men's fencing team produced outstanding results in its competition at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships on Sunday, March 11, at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA.

Vying for spots at the NCAA National Championship later this month, several Violets left little doubt that they will be heading to that event.

Leading the pack for NYU was Grant Williams, who won the sabre competition with a masterful performance. After going undefeated in pool play, he advanced to the finals where he defeated Olympian Eli Dershowitz of Harvard University.

"Grant has established himself as a top collegiate sabre fencer," said Head Coach Steve Mormando. "He proved it today and is going to be ready to face the best of the best at the National Championships."

Also competing in the sabre was team captain Mickey Bak, who took ninth place in a field of 33.

Another pair of NYU fencers landed near the top of the standings in foil, as Zohaib Mannan and captain Philip Shin finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 35-man field.

Another potential national qualifier is epee fencer Ian Sanders, who finished eighth in a 41-man field.

"I'm confident that all five of those fencers will qualify for Nationals," Mormando added.

A maximum of six fencers from each school are able to qualify, with regional competition one of many factors in the consideration process.

The NCAA National Championships will be hosted by Penn State University in University Park, PA, from Thursday-Sunday, March 22-25. The official announcement on qualifiers is scheduled to be made on Tuesday, March 13.
