Two members of the New York University women's tennis team concluded play at the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Oracle Cup in Rome, GA, on Saturday, October 13.
Playing for seventh place, the doubles team of
Coco Kulle and
Flyora Shiyanova broke out and picked up their first-ever Oracle Cup victory after defeating Grace and Maggie Riermann of Bethel University.
"The other team fought hard, but Coco and Flyora were just a bit better in all areas," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "Overall, it was an enjoyable tournament that brought together the best from around the country."
After a couple of hard-fought losses through the first two rounds, the Violets duo got out to an early lead on route to taking their first set of the tournament 6-3. In the second set, their opponents came back harder, but Kulle and Shiyanova were well-equipped to deal with the challenge and managed to hold off the attack to win 7-5.
"It was good to end the fall on a positive note," added Choy. "The women will get some well-deserved rest and look to the spring duel-match season."
The Violets will have a four-month break before they return to the courts on February 23, when they open up their spring season against Haverford College.
