Over the previous nine weeks, the 2016-17 #NYUAthleticsTop10 has recounted the best-of-the-best feats that were accomplished by Violet student-athletes and teams during the last academic year. Today is the conclusion of that countdown.
Coming in at #1 in our countdown are NYU's individual national champions,
Nathan Pike and
Honore Collins.
At the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, Pike, the second seed in the 133-lb. weight class, advanced to the final of his bracket where
he defeated fifth-seeded Jay Albis of Johnson & Wales University by pin (4:48), earning NYU's first-ever wrestling national championship.
The West Covina, CA, native overcame his disappointment from the previous year's NCAA Championship when he came in second place nationally after falling in the championship match of the 133-lb. division.
"To do this as a senior is really special," Pike explained. "It really validated coming back for this last semester. I owe a lot to my teammates, coaches and the support from everyone at NYU and within the athletic department. It's a lot easier to step out there when you have a ton of people in your corner."
Pike, who was named NYU's Senior Athlete of the Year, finished the 2016-17 season with a 15-2 overall record. He concluded his Violet career with 63 wins in the 133-lb. division, most in school history.
As a team, NYU finished the NCAA's with 30.5 points (second most in program history) and in 15th place of the 68 represented teams.
Collins was a part of the Violet women's swimming & diving contingent which earned 20 All-America accolades and broke four school records
at the NCAA Division III Championships. The freshman achieved both of those feats when
she became NYU's first-ever swimming national champion by winning the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:00.97.
"I'm so happy that I can wear our cap and that I got the win," said an ecstatic Collins after her victory. "I love my team and I love swimming here at NYU."
The Evanston, IL, native earned another All-America honor as a member of the Violets' sixth-place 400-yard freestyle relay and garnered an Honorable Mention All-America accolade as a member of NYU's ninth-place 200-yard freestyle relay.
The Violets tied a program record by tying for eighth place at the NCAA Championships (122.5 points) out of the 51 teams who scored points.
Collins was also honored as NYU's Freshman Female Athlete of the Year and as a Scholar All-American by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).
