At #3 in the #NYUAthleticsTop10 for 2016-17 is the New York University men's swimming & diving team finishing in a program-best fifth place at the NCAA Division III Championships in Shenandoah, TX.
The Violets had a total of 11 representatives (10 swimmers and one diver) at Nationals. The large contingent qualified for the meet by achieving certain speed benchmarks, known as "cut" times, in particular events over the course of the season.
At the NCAA's, the Violets collected 18 All-America and eight Honorable Mention All-America accolades. The team finished with 243.5 points, 20.5 points ahead of the sixth-place finisher, fellow University Athletic Association (UAA) member Washington University in St. Louis
Leading the way for NYU was junior
Tim Kou, who earned All-America honors with fourth-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard breaststroke, and as a member of the Violets' 400-yard medley relay (seventh) and 400-yard freestyle relay (seventh).
Fellow junior
Ian Rainey collected All-America honors in the 400-yard IM (second) and 200-yard butterfly (sixth), in addition to his Honorable Mention All-America performance in the 500-yard freestyle (ninth).
Kou and Rainey each added an additional Honorable Mention All-America honor as members of the 10th-place 800-yard freestyle relay team, competing along with junior
Alexander Katz and freshman
Daniel Sing.
On the diving boards, sophomore
Connor Brisson took second place in the three-meter dive and third place in the one-meter, collecting two All-America accolades. The Greenwich, CT, native wrapped up a historic season in which he broke all four of NYU's diving records.
All in all, team members broke nine NYU records at the meet and 13 of 23 school records over the course of the 2016-17 season.
