#2: Women's Golf Finishes Fifth At NCAA Championship

Violets Cap Successful Season With Best-Ever National Performance

At #2 in the #NYUAthleticsTop10 for 2016-17 is the New York University women's golf team's program-best fifth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship in Houston, TX.

The Violets tied the University of Texas-Tyler for fifth in the 22-team, four-round competition, after entering the final day in sixth place behind the Patriots. 

Junior Alyssa Poentis led NYU's contingent of five by finishing in a tie for 11th place individually in the 116-woman field with a score of 304 (80-72-75-77). Sophomore Jenni Bluetling followed Poentis to shoot 307 (82-73-76-76) and tie for 19th place. 

Rounding out the Violet fivesome were sophomore Patty Treevichaphan at 317 (79-80-76-82, T-33rd), freshman Arisa Kimura with 320 (81-78-79-82, T-37th) and junior Kristin Lee with 329 (80-86-81-82, T-49th).

In addition to their best-ever national finish, the Violets won five tournaments during the season, including their second-straight University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship and third-consecutive Liberty League title. NYU also captured the Jekyll Island Collegiate, St. Lawrence and Jack Leaman Invitationals.

Mmebers of the squad were also recognized individually for their performances in 2016-17. Head Coach Brad Johnson and assistant coaches Meaghan Kenny and Todd Kolean were named UAA and Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year. Bluetling, Poentis and Treevichaphan earned First Team All-UAA and Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-East Region honors. Poentis additionally earned WGCA Honorable Mention All-America accolades and was named Liberty League Player of the Year, while Kimura took home the Liberty League Rookie of the Year trophy. 

Academically, Bluetling was one of seven NYU student-athletes named to the UAA Presidents Council Scholar-Athlete Team. Poentis, Treevichaphan and senior captain Mikaela Santos received the Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sports-Scholar Award while Bluetling, Poentis and sophomore Michelle Dicke earned UAA Spring Sport All-Academic recognition.
