New York University's men's swimming & diving team finished a strong dual-meet season on Saturday, January 28, defeating Vassar College 189-95 in Poughkeepsie, NY.
The Violets (5-4) started the event off strong with the quartet of Charlie Wu, Bryson Naylor, James Bedell, and Jerry Crowley winning the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:38.94.
Naylor also won both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly races with times of 54.69 and 2:03.41, respectively. Matt Kendall came in first in both the 200- (2:17) and 100- (1:02.82) yard breaststroke races.
Crowley continued a successful season with victories in the 500- (4:59.65) and 100-yard (50.61) freestyle races.
Wu and Bedell also posted individual victories in the dual meet. Wu won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.55, while Bedell took the 1,000-yard freestyle race with a time of 10:34.41.
"Our team swam really well," said head coach Bob Sorensen. "We're really well prepared going into UAA's."
Diving had an equally impressive showing. Austen Blease won the one-meter dive (330.30) and came in second in the three-meter dive (304.94) with two NCAA-qualifying scores. Adam Winerip also had a good meet, placing third in the one- meter dive with an NCAA-qualifying score of 287.10, as well as third in the three-meter dive (260.25).
“We had an exciting day,” said assistant coach Todd Kolean. “It was a very solid outing for NYU diving.”
The team will have three weeks to practice before it begins competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships on February 16. The meet will be held at Case Western University in Cleveland, OH.
