The New York University's men's swimming & diving team showed that its winter training paid off at their first meet after the trip. The Violets raced, and conquered, Springfield College on Saturday, January 14, at the Palladium Athletic Facility in Manhattan.
NYU swam hard, winning all but three races and producing a winning score of 174-108. In addition to multiple wins, the team also saw many races where its members finished in at least two of the top three spots.
Perhaps the strongest swimmers of the night, however, were
Cole Talbott, captain
Bryson Naylor,
Charlie Wu, and captain
James Bedell, each of whom won two races. Talbott was victorious in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races with respective times of 1:47.03 and 4:56.14. Naylor won the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke with respective times of 1:01.36 and 2:16.00. Wu was victorious in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke with respective times of 53.89 and 1:58.90, while Bedell captured the 50-yard freestyle (22.01) and the 100-yard butterfly (52.71).
The Violets also swam strong relay races. In the 400-yard medley relay, the foursome of Wu, Naylor, Bedell and
Jerry Crowley came out on top with a time of 3:36 76
"I was very pleased with our effort and our times," said head coach
Bob Sorensen. "After swimming hard during our training trip, I think our team is in a good position to swim well the rest of the season."
Diving had an equally triumphant day, with
Austen Blease continuing his outstanding record. He won both the three- and one-meter dives with respective scores of 285.15 and 315.52, both of which were NCAA qualifying marks.
"It was a great day for NYU diving," said diving coach
Scott Donie. "We put together a very solid performance."
The Violets will return to the pool next week, when they go up against Old Dominion University and Montclair State University. The meet is set to take place on Friday, Jan. 20, beginning at 4:00pm at the Palladium Athletic Facility.
