The New York University men's swimming & diving team beat Vassar College on Saturday, January 29, at the dual meet held at the Palladium Athletic Facility in Manhattan. The Violets finished with 158 points, while the brewers had 104 points.

The swimmers were led by their two freshman stand-outs, Cole Talbott and Charlie Wu. Talbott won both the 100 freestyle (49.47) and the 200 freestyle (1:47.12). Wu won the 100 backstroke (54.44) and the 200 breaststroke (2:16.56). He was also a member of the 200 medley relay team that won the race in 2:39.68.

Bryson Naylor, Aaron Weintraub and Ed Carroll were also members of the relay team.

In preparation for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships next month, a number of Violet swimmers competed in events that they normally do not swim.

“We switched things around a little bit,” said head coach Bob Sorensen. “That gave me an opportunity to see what other events people might swim for UAA's.”

One of the swimmers who switched today was Max Smitham, a sprinter who won the 1,000 freestyle (10:38.38). Steven Oates took second in the race (10:38.64) and Jeff Huber finished in third (10:59.12).

“Overall, I'm very pleased with the results,” Sorensen said. “It's a good preparation for the UAA Championships.”

The NYU divers also had a good meet and were led once again by Max Norris. Norris won both of his events, with NCAA Division III qualifying scores of 312.68 points in the one-meter dive and 320.93 points in the three-meter dive. Both scores were only a few points shy of breaking the school records.

Jeff Bubley took second in both the one-meter dive (239.70) and three-meter dive (248.86).

“It was a great day for the diving team,” said diving coach Scott Donie. “These scores give our divers a really good chance to qualify for nationals. It was also a good way to end the season heading into the UAA Championships.”

Today's dual meet – the last regular-season dual meet of the season – was also Senior Day, and the Violets honored the seven graduating seniors on the team: Philip Anton, Socrates Ayvaliotis, Paul Cafiero, Ryan Drumm, Andy King, Norris and Oates.

The Violets will compete at the UAA Championships on February 17-19. The meet will be hosted by the University of Rochester.
