The New York University men's swimming & diving team beat Springfield College on Saturday, January 15, in Springfield, MA. The Violets scored 151 points while Springfield finished with 149.

NYU was led by a duo of talented freshmen, Cole Talbott and Charlie Wu. Talbott won both the 200 freestyle (1:47.54) and the 100 butterfly (54.58). He also took second in 200 butterfly (2:03.77).

Wu also won two individual events, the 200 backstroke (1:58.08) and the 200 individual medley (2:01.34). He also swam a leg of the 200 medley relay and helped the Violets win the race in 1:39.17.

Another member of that relay team, Bryson Naylor, also had a good meet, winning the 100 breaststroke (1:02.17) and the 500 freestyle (4:58.82).

Naylor and Wu were joined on the relay team by Aaron Weintraub and James Bedell.

“Overall, we swam very fast, considering we just returned from our training trip,” said head coach Bob Sorensen. “I'm very pleased with everyone's performance.”

The diving team was anchored by Max Norris, who placed third in the one-meter dive with 272.48 points and second in the three-meter dive with 287.18 points. Norris' score in the three-meter dive was an NCAA National Championship qualifying score.

Ryan Drumm took fourth in the one-meter dive with 213.82 points, and Jeff Bubley took fourth in the three-meter dive, scoring 229.04 points.

“We had a great day,” said diving coach Scott Donie. “All the work the team put in on the training trip paid off. We're in great shape heading into our last two dual meets.”

The meet was close throughout the day, and the lead changed hands several times throughout the day. In fact, the competition was almost a rehash of NYU's last encounter with Springfield, in 2009, when the two teams tied.

“I'm very pleased with the outcome,” Sorensen said. “We won in a very exciting finish that went down to the last relay.”

The Violets return to the pool on Saturday, January 22, when they take on the College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ. Competition begins at 2:00 pm.
