The New York University men's fencing team continued its 2010-11 campaign at the Sacred Heart Invitational on Sunday, December 5, in Fairfield, CT.
The competition featured several Division I schools, including Princeton University and Harvard University, ranked sixth and eighth in the nation, respectively.
The Violets had a 1-5 record, earning the match victory against Vassar College by a score of 15-12. NYU also suffered a pair of close 15-12 defeats vs. the University of North Carolina and host Sacred Heart.
The Violets return home with several impressive marks in each weapon.
In foil, the team fared particularly well against Vassar, shutting out the Brewers while compiling a bout record of 9-0.
Phil Jamesson went 9-6 overall. Jamesson,
Christian Vastola and captain
Oung-Jo Yuh were each 3-0 opposite the Vassar squad.
Moving to epee,
Enrique Cavazos finished 9-9 for the Invitational, including a 3-0 mark vs. Sacred Heart.
The sabre team featured
Hugo Rodrigues, 7-10 for the tournament, and captain
Ben Radding, who was 6-11. Rodrigues fenced to 3-0 records against both Vassar and North Carolina.
"It was a difficult weekend. We faced three of the top 10 teams we will see this season," said NYU head coach
Steve Mormando. "Several fencers were great, just not at the same time. And that's what you need to win matches."
The men's squad makes its return to the fencing strip in home matches at the Coles Sports Center as part of the NYU Invitational on January 22.
