The New York University women's tennis team finished in sixth place as its UAA Championship run came to a close on Sunday, April 26, falling 4–0 to Case Western Reserve University at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, FL.
After a long battle the previous day, the Violets were unable to find the same momentum against the Spartans. Case Western Reserve took an early lead by securing the doubles point and quickly followed up with wins in the top half of the singles lineup to reach the four points necessary to clinch the match.
In doubles play, the Spartans took the opening point with wins at the first and second positions.
At No. 1, Visnja Gusavac and Vera Bondarenko fell 6–3, while the No. 2 duo of Victoria Wang and Emma Kast was defeated 6–2. At No. 3, Norah Staunton and Sophia Wright were trailing 5–2 when the point was clinched.
The Violets were unable to find the rhythm in singles play.
Gusavac dropped her match at No. 1 by a score of 6–3, 6–0, while Wang fell 6–1, 6–0 at the No. 2 spot. The match was officially called after Sophia Yang was defeated 6–1, 6–3 at No. 3 singles.
Despite the final score, several Violets were still fighting in their respective matches when play was halted.
Bondarenko was in a strong position at No. 4 singles, having won her first set 6–3 and holding a 4–3 lead in the second. At No. 5, Siona Vallabhaneni narrowly lost her opening set in a tiebreak 7–6(5), and Aditi Narayan was trailing 7–5 in a close first set at No. 6.
"The women had a good season overall," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "They just didn't bounce back well after yesterday's marathon match. Case was well rested and played better, especially in the doubles. I know the returners are motivated to work hard over the summer heading into next year."
The Violets now await announcement of participants for the NCAA Division III Championships in Chattanooga, TN, beginning on May 18.
