Women’s Tennis Begins UAA Run

#6 Violets Fall to #3 Carnegie Mellon

The New York University women's tennis team began its run at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Friday, April 24, at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, FL.

The Violets entered the competition as the #6 seed, while Carnegie Mellon was seeded #3.

The competition began with doubles matches where the Tartans earned the point by claiming two of the three contests.

Visnja Gusavac and Sophia Yang dropped a 6-1 decision at No. 1, while Victoria Wang and Emma Kast fell 6-0 at No. 2. At No. 3, Norah Staunton and Sophia Wright went unfinished but were in a tight contest, trailing 4-3 before play was stopped.

In singles play, the Tartans captured straight-set victories at No. 2, No. 4, and No. 5 to clinch the match. The No. 1, No. 3, and No. 6 matches went unfinished as Carnegie Mellon posted the 4-0 team win.

"It was a tough day at the office," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "Bad combination of CMU playing very well and us struggling to find a rhythm. They got on top of us early and put the pressure on. Visnja played well but wasn't able to complete. We look to turn it around tomorrow."

NYU moves on to play #7 Brandeis University on Saturday, April 25, beginning at 12:30 PM.
