Women’s Tennis Posts Dramatic Win Over Brandeis University

#6 Violets Secure Victory Over #7 Brandeis to Advance in UAA Championship

The New York University women's tennis team battled to a hard-fought 4–3 win over Brandeis University at the UAA Championship on Saturday, April 25, at Sanlando Park, FL.

The match came down to the very last court. With the team score tied 3–3, Victoria Wang stepped up at No. 2 singles to clinch the comeback. After already helping NYU get a win in doubles, she fought through a grueling three-set match to win 7–5, 7–6(5), 7–6(6) and seal the victory.

After Brandeis earned the doubles point, the Violets came back to win the majority of the singles matches.

Visnja Gusavac was dominant at No. 1, posting a 6–2, 7–6(3) win. At No. 3, Sophia Yang showed a lot of poise, winning a 7–6(9) tiebreak in the first set before taking the match 6–3. Vera Bondarenko also delivered a huge point at No. 4, bouncing back from a second-set loss to win 6–4, 6–4, 6–4.

Brandeis managed to pick up points at No. 5 and No. 6, where Siona Vallabhaneni lost a tough three-setter and Aditi Narayan fell 7–6(5), 6–1. But with the match hanging in the balance, Wang delivered under pressure to secure the fourth and final point for NYU.

"It was quite the battle," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "The women fought all the way to the end and were able to come out on top after 4.5 hours. They were two closely matched teams and it came down to a third set tiebreaker at number two. Happy to get the win and play Case tomorrow."

In doubles play, the Violets managed to secure one win. At No. 2, the duo of  Wang and Emma Kast were dominant with a 6–0 sweep. At No. 1, Gusavac and Sophia Yang put in a tough effort but lost 7–5, while Norah Staunton and Sophia Wright fell 6–4 at No. 3.

The Violets will return to the UAA stage on April 26 when they face Case Western Reserve University in the Fifth-Place match at 8:30 AM.
