The New York University Men's Fencing team competed at the Miller Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina on Sunday, February 9, in Chapel Hill, NC.
For this event, the Violets faced five other schools, securing wins in two of their five matches. The team's first win of the day was against Brandeis University by a score of 15-12, while the second win came against Air Force Academy with a final result of 20-7.
The team began the day with two close losses against John Hopkins University and Boston College, with a 15-12 result in each match. For their final match, the Violets fell to the host Tar Heels by a score of 20-7.
The day's best performer was team captain
Jerry Pan, who put up an impressive 12-3 record in saber, going 3-0 against both Boston College and Air Force. For foil, the top fencers were
Adam Wong (7-3) and
Anup Banerjee (6-3), while the epee squad was led by
Steven Grams (5-1) and
Ajit Sivakumar (5-4).
"The team had made some solid performances today among a very competitive field," said Head Coach
Ben Bratton. "We had some individual results that I was very pleased with and I'm optimistic as we head into the the final stretch of the season."
The men's fencing team returns to the strip on Wednesday, February 13, at 5 pm, as they take on host Columbia University, Vassar College, and Sacred Heart University at the George Kolombatovich Historical Meet.
