The New York University women's tennis team defeated Wellesley College 6–1 on Saturday, March 7, in the Bronx, NY.
The Violets took an early lead by securing the doubles point with a 6–4 win from the No. 1 duo of Sophia Yang and Visnja Gusavac and a 6–2 victory from the No. 2 pair of Emma Kast and Victoria Wang.
The team carried its momentum into singles play, winning five of six matches.
Wang added a point to the team score with a 6–2, 6–1 win at No. 1, while Gusavac dominated at No. 2 with a 6–0, 6–0 victory.
At No. 3, Yang earned a 6–3, 6–2 win and Vera Bondarenko contributed a 6–1, 6–4 victory at No. 4. At No. 5, Siona Vallabhaneni secured a hard-fought 7–6, 6–3 win, while Aditi Narayan fell 6–2, 6–1 at No. 6.
"I think our team is a little undervalued in the national rankings," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "We played the number 8 and 9 teams close last week. We came into today's match-up two spots behind #22 Wellesley and had a good win against a good team. Our top four went out after securing the doubles point and closed out the match. Visnja had a good day getting a doubles win and sweeping her singles easily."
The Violets return to the courts on Sunday, March 8, for Tear It Up! Day, where they will host the Rochester Institute of Technology back at the Stadium Tennis Center in the Bronx.
