The New York University women's tennis team opened its 2026 spring season with a 7–0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, February 21, at the Stadium Tennis Center in the Bronx, NY.
NYU secured the opening point with a sweep in doubles play. At No. 1, Sophia Yang and Visnja Gusavac earned a 7–6 victory. The No. 2 duo of Emma Kast and Victoria Wang dominated in a 6–0 shutout, while Norah Staunton and Siona Vallabhaneni added a 6–2 win at No. 3.
In singles, the Violets won all six matches. At No. 1, Victoria Wang led the way with a 7–6, 7–6 win. Visnja Gusavac posted a 6–3, 6–3 victory at No. 2, and Sophia Yang earned a 6–3, 6–3 decision at No. 3. Siona Vallabhaneni contributed a 6–4, 6–0 win at No. 4. No. 5 Aditi Narayan clinched the final point with a dramatic comeback, winning 4–6, 7–5, 10–8 in a match tiebreak. Emma Kast added a 6–1, 6–0 victory at No. 6.
"I was really happy with the way the women played," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "First matches are always a little nervy for both returners and newcomers. I thought we did a very good job of settling in early and playing the level of tennis that we can. We got off to a quick start by sweeping the doubles. Vic and Emma dominated their match and Norah and Siona won easily as well. Visnja and Sophia got down early but fought back to win in a tiebreaker. They faced four match points and came through. The singles were pretty straightforward and we were able to complete the sweep. It's a good starting point and we hope to build from here."
The Violets return to the courts on Sunday, February 22, to take on Union College in the Bronx, NY.
