New York University's
Jimena Menendez, the Violets' all-time wins leader, kept her collegiate career going with a straight set victory in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Individual Women's Tennis Championship on Sunday, May 25.
The NYU senior dominated her opponent, Jay Xiao of Johns Hopkins University.
After being pushed to the limit with two come-from-behind three-set victories on Saturday, Menendez had little trouble with Sunday's opponent, taking the match 6-3, 6-1.
"The match was more straight forward than yesterday, although closer than the score indicated," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "There were a lot of deuce points and Jimena came up big and seemed to win them all."
Having pushed her program-record career wins total to 63, Menendez will face Jacqueline Soloveychik of Wesleyan University in Monday's semifinal.
No one in NYU program history has ever advanced in this tournament.
"This is uncharted territory for the program," Choy added. "Obviously, the tournament will get tougher. But, so happy that she will get another match.
That match is set to take place at 1:00 PM ET on Monday.
