NYU Athletics Second in Directors’ Cup Standings

Violets Record a Nation-Best 458 Points During Winter

Following a winter season in which three teams were in contention for an NCAA National Championship, New York University Athletics currently sits in second place in the Learfield Directors' Cup Division III standings.

The Violets have accumulated 727.00 points through the completion of the winter season, adding a nation-wide high of 458.00 points during the winter.

NYU sits seconds in the season-long standings, with Johns Hopkins University occupying the top spot with 865.00 points.

Trailing NYU in third place is another University Athletic Association (UAA) institution, Emory University, with 662.50 points.

"I am immensely proud of our student-athletes and coaches for their success during the winter season," said NYU Director of Athletics, Jake Olkkola. "The entire Athletics Department came together to give our winter teams the best chance to succeed and our Violets met the moment."

NYU's winter success was driven by three teams vying for national championships: men's basketball, women's basketball and women's swimming and diving. On March 22 (aka Super Saturday), each team competed for titles in their respective sports. The women's basketball team captured its second consecutive championship, while both the men's basketball team and women's swimming & diving team finished as national runner-ups.

The women's basketball team finished with a perfect 31-0 record for the second consecutive season, capped by a second-straight finals victory over Smith College, and earned the maximum 100 points.

The men's basketball team returned to the National Championship Game for the first time since 1994, but fell just short to Trinity College (CT) in the finals. The women's swimming & diving team placed only behind champion MIT at the NCAA Division III Championships, the best result in NYU history.

Both Violet squads contributed 90 points.

The men's swimming and diving team added 80 points by matching a program-best fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships.

The men's and women's fencing teams combined for 53 points as the Violets placed 21st overall at the National Championships.

The Violets' wrestling team rounded out the NYU scoring during the winter season with 45 points after taking 29th overall at the NCAA Championships.

Following spring sports competition, the final Learfield Directors' Cup standings will be released in June.
